Today my dear friend Char and I spent the afternoon at the Comiskey house. All six of the Comiskey’s were there – Andy, Annette, Nick, Sam, Katie and Greg. The moment I entered the house I realized I was in far over my head. I was greeted by the immediate sound of multiple people talking loudly and over each other. First thought – “Dear Lord I’m meeting the family from My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” The introvert inside me wanted to retreat to the corner.
Upon entering the kitchen I looked upon six strange faces. They all paused for a moment to say hi…then dove right back into talking loudly and over each other. As I watched them, I considered my own family. My mom and sisters carry on conversations easily, but it’s mostly low-key and calm. By no stretch of the imagination could my father be called a conversationalist. As for me, I love talking to friends but try to avoid talking to strangers at all costs. The introvert located firmly in the core of my being whimpered as I sat on the couch talking to Greg and listening to everything going on in the room.
There was a saving grace in this situation. The Comiskey’s are hilarious. Actually, hilarious doesn’t even begin to describe it. I laughed so hard the muscles in my face hurt. I feel as though my face received an intense and merciless workout. The only breaks in the smiling occurred when I took on a shocked/slightly horrified expression (they have a tendency to say the things you never think people will say out loud). Even those moments quickly receded back into laughter.
And, lest I forget, lunch was amazing.
We’re going to be back there in a little over a week. Believe it or not, I can’t wait. It’s going to be a blast.
