Background Information: Salina, KS is a town of 50,000 people. There are maybe four places to get Chinese food. I had been craving Chinese since I got into town on Friday. After a horrifically awful meal at one location I braved the cold to try another restaurant two days later.
Location: Imperial Gardens – my sister’s favorite Chinese restaurant in town.
I walked into the restaurant. There were two white and two Asian men behind the counter. Considering there are 100 people (a generous guess) of Asian descent in the town, I’m figuring it looks good so far.
I order my dinner, pay and wait. When the food is ready they place it in a bag and call my name. As I walk back to the counter I see a huge bin of plastic forks. I ask for chopsticks.
The friendly man reaches under the counter and pulls out a pair of chopsticks. He pauses, looks at me, looks at the chopsticks and says…”I think a spoon would be better.”
I realized as I stood there that I am probably the first white person to walk into that building and ask for chopsticks. He was just trying to prevent me from stains and embarrassment later but still…”I think a spoon would be better”??
I can’t wait to get back to Kansas City.
Amazing. There is nothing else to say just simply amazing.
